ABOUT US
Formulated by Dorneka Ward, ‘MAJI’, or ‘MAJI MEDIA’ is a second-hand media online store based in England, that sells second-hand physical media of Black origin (by, of, or inspired by Black rites, people, communities and cultures) including, but not limited to: comics, graphic novels, books, zines, records and vinyls, to customers across the UK and beyond.
All works will be documented within our NEWS section, where the founder will give details into the work and its artistic/environmental context, and listed for purchase, in the STORE section.
From our sales, we seek to re-invest a portion of profits (after business operations are covered), back into Black creatives and creators, social causes, as a form of collective mutual aid.
As a writer and storymaker, I’ve always been deeply interested in the relationship between ancestral lineages of art and folklore, and how our cultural tales, mythologies and histories have been expressed through peer-to-peer oralstorytelling, literature and music, particularly in community-wide processes of exchanging and sharing.
MAJI was created partially, because I believe that creativity’s importance lies not only in its ability to be an outlet of internal expression when well-inspired, but also as a diagnostic, memory-based consciousness that can assist with the examination of the existences and pattern-forms of Blackness across time and place.
Creativity, as a tool allows us to observe the ways in which our lives and beliefs have been and can be, as well as what attributes and understandings of life should change for the health of our world and descendants and what values should also remain.
Our arts and well-living are thus interconnected, and engagement in both thus should not be unaffordable, unthinkable and/or inaccessible, especially by and to those who would benefit supremely from the activation of the inner world, the emotional and psychological benefits, that creating, living and digesting good creative work provides.
MAJI is a commitment to formulate a long-lasting creative and Black infrastructure, where resources, capital and memory materials are circulated, for our individual and shared benefit.
OUR ROLE
Presently - we’re at our first stage of production collection, and building of a financial process/mutual aid process, that makes sense.
We expect the store to open in the near future.
